Cleo emerged to find herself on a ledge, halfway up a cliff, overlooking a millpond sea. The sun was enormous as it set on the horizon, casting spectacular rays of shimmering orange light across the water. She was alone, none of the others anywhere to be seen, her only companion a chalkboard attached to the rock behind her.
'So, it's just you and me,' came a quiet voice from the edge of the cliff, making Cleo jump violently. She turned to see who was there.
'Patsy,' said Cleo, breathing a sigh of relief as she took in the old woman.
'We were the only two who persuaded others to come through our doors,' said Patsy, with a mischievous grin.
'You played it well,' said Cleo, returning the smile.
'Likewise,' said Patsy. 'You were very convincing. So, what do we have next?' She stepped up to the chalkboard. 'Hmmm,' she said, prompting Cleo to take another look.
'Triangles,' said Cleo, surprised, taking in the crude drawings that had appeared. 'There was nothing there when I looked a minute ago.'
'Well, something there now. Male energy,' said Patsy, indicating to the triangle pointing upwards. 'Female energy,' she said, gesturing towards a triangle pointing down. 'And the diamond represents joined energy.'
Cleo's energy rose with excitement. 'You know what these symbols mean?'
Patsy laughed. 'Of course. Well, I know what the ancient tribes of the Wild think they mean, anyway.'
'Ancient Wild tribes?' asked Cleo, hardly able to contain her interest.
Patsy rolled her eyes. 'It's such a shame they don't teach proper history in schools any longer,' she said, huffing a little. 'Back in a time before the Mind, Body, and Spirit Gods were worshipped separately, the people were split into only two groups: those who lived together in the cities, and those who lived in the Wild.
'Those who chose the Wild lived a nomadic, tribal existence, always moving from one place to another, trading with other tribes. They lived to conquer their energy. It is said thatâalongside the furtherance of their skillsâthey looked for those with whom they could join their energy. This required not only practice, but compatibility, and willingness from both sides. A fleeting touch might reveal you'd found a match, but you had to trust the other. Trust them enough to put your life in their hands.'
'What do you mean?' asked Cleo, bursting with questions. 'How could a touch reveal if your energy is compatible? And what do you mean, about putting your life into their hands?'
Patsy frowned. 'Tingles,' she said. 'Have you ever felt them?'
Cleo said nothing, reeling at this news. She nodded in a way that both confirmed she had and encouraged Patsy to continue.
'When you meditate with a person who gives you this sensation, you literally share your energy with them. This heightens your abilities, especially if that person is stronger in another discipline, but it also leaves you vulnerable. The other is able to sap some, or all of your energy, and keep it for themselves. In the most extreme cases, people have taken every
